Prairie du Chien Photos

I visited Prairie du Chien on Tuesday September 24, 2019. I had the days off and decided to visit Crawford County and Prairie du Chien. The last time I was in Prairie du Chien, I was 12 or 13 years old and my family and I toured some of the historic sites. So it was fun to visit again.

The courthouse was originally built in 1867 I think. It has been added on to several times. The Prairie du Chien police wing was built in 1996, and I think the sheriffs office was part of this building project. The main courthouse entrance is near the sheriffs office, but the addition near the parking lot dates from 1930. It’s a nice building but the mature trees around it make it difficult to get a good picture of it.

Just across the street is the new Crawford County Administration building. It seems like most of the offices, including the clerk of courts, are located here.

I walked from the courthouse to the Washington Street Park and then across the bridge to St. Feriole Island. The small marina in the park was built in 1960 and is on a small channel of the Mississippi River. I walked through the big park to the Villa Louis site. there is a new museum store, but I skipped that, and the guided tour, in favor of just walking the grounds and taking some photos. The exterior of the villa is pretty much as I remember it. As are the grounds, including the foundations of the first Fort Crawford.

St Feriole Island is a big park area, which I don’t remember at all. I walked through it on my way back to the car and saw a sculpture garden. The park is so big that it has streets and driving seems to be the preferred method of getting from one site to another.

On my way out of town I drove past the Fort Crawford Museum which is on the site of the second Fort Crawford which took part in the Blackhawk War of 1832. The buildings seem much smaller than I remembered and that was about it. I stopped on briefly and then headed for home.

Merrill Photos

I visited Merrill on Monday September 10, 2018 on my way home from the Door County Century bike ride. I had visited Merrill only occasionally as a child, so other than a few memories of a restaurant on Main Street I had no real connection to Merrill; certainly I had no memories of the Lincoln County courthouse.

My camera was giving me some trouble at my first stop in Antigo, but had recovered somewhat, so I took a few photos with it and then it failed completely. The first three photos in the gallery were taken with the camera but of the rest were taken with my phone and they seem to have turned out well.

Antigo Photos

I visited Antigo on Monday September 10, 2018 on my way home from the Door County Century bike ride. It was the first of two counties that I visited on this day. It had been many years since I last visited Antigo; the business district seemed somewhat familiar but I have no memories at all of the Langlade County courthouse.

As I visited the courthouse my camera failed; most likely the sensor had had enough, and every shot came out over exposed. This is why I have only a few photos of the courthouse. I was trying to debug the camera issue and failed – it was a hardware failure after all. Thankfully I was able to take a few photos with my phone.

Whitehall Photos

I visited Whitehall on June 3, 2018. It was the final stop o a three county tour that took me to Buffalo and Pepin counties as well as Trempealeau County. Whitehall is a small town, and the courthouse is located right on Main Street, so it was easy to find, and also parking was easy too. The city hall is located right behind the courthouse; it’s kind of a non-descript building, so it was lucky that I took a picture of it. There is also a nice ball park just a block away from the courthouse.

Durand Photos

I visited Durand on June 3, 2018. It was my first visit to Durand as far as I can remember, and I think it was also my first time in Pepin County. I had no trouble getting to Durand from my previous stop in Alma in Buffalo County, but once I got to Durand, navigation became a bit of a problem. Several of the streets surrounding the government center were torn up, so there was a detour, but at the fork in the road, there was no indication which way to proceed. Naturally I took the wrong turn and so it took a bit longer for me to get to the government center.

The government center is a remodeled hospital and/or nursing home, and has been used as the government center since 1984. One wing contains the sheriff’s offices, jail and the Durand police, and the other wing has the county offices including the court.

Afterward, I drove down to the old courthouse, which is now a museum. It is one of the few surviving wooden courthouses and so is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I did not have the time to go inside, perhaps on my next visit, so I drove to the Lower Chippewa View Park to see the veteran’s memorial. Very nice and in a great location.

Alma Photos

I visited Alma on Sunday June 3, 2018. It was my first stop on a day trip in which I visited three counties: Buffalo, Pepin and Trempealeau counties.Prior to this trip I had never been to Alma and as far as I can remember I had never been to Buffalo County at all. So it was kind of fun to go someplace new.

I drove into Alma along the Mississippi River, passing the big power plant as I came into the city. The city has grown along the river without expanding too much to the east because of the bluffs. The main downtown area is along the river, but the courthouse is located one level up.

The courthouse was built in 1962 and the large addition for the sheriff’s offices was completed in 1988. After I took pictures of the courthouse, and the veteran’s memorial, I drove up to Buena Vista Park, which is on top of the bluff. The view is incredible: you can see the river and the power plant and the dam, and of course that other state on the western side of the Mississippi. Interestingly enough, I was able to look down and see the courthouse from the park.

If you visit Alma, be sure to stop at Buena Vista Park!

The Marathon County courthouse on September 11, 2017

Wausau Photos

I visited the Marathon County courthouse on September 11, 2017 – it was the third courthouse I had visited on this beautiful Monday morning as I took the long way home from Door County. I hadn’t been in Wausau for many years so I don’t really have any useful memories of the city, or even Marathon County.

The courthouse is very striking and very unusual for a 1950s Wisconsin courthouse. I walked around downtown for a while after photographing the courthouse and saw the downtown park being set up for the International Wisconsin Ginseng Festival which was held later in the week. I also made a quick stop at the Wausau Center which is a large indoor shopping mall just a block or two from the park and also from the courthouse.

The Shawano County courthouse on September 11, 2017

Shawano Photos

I visited Shawano on the morning of September 11, 2017. I was on my way home from Door County and I took the long way home in order to visit three county courthouses; Shawano was my first stop that morning. The city has definitely changed since my last visit more than 40 years ago! It’s a very nice place and easy to get around. The courthouse itself is a simple building but still striking. Unfortunately there are four large red maples on the east side of the building that pretty much hide the front of the courthouse.

Because I visited so early in the morning, the direction of the sun prevented me from getting any good photos of the lake. Perhaps on my next visit!

The Menominee County courthouse on September 11, 2017

Keshena Photos

I visited Keshena on Monday September 11, 2017. I was on my way home from the Door County Century bike ride and I took the long way home in order to visit the Shawano, Menominee and Marathon courthouses. I hadn’t been in Menominee County for more than 40 years, so it was interesting to see how much things had changed. As I drove into Keshena I could see the new high school and of course the casino, and there were other changes as well. Keshena is not a town, so it is spread out along the highway and it takes a while to drive through it.

I’m not sure when the courthouse was actually built; according to my sources it must have been after 1998. It’s a very striking building and certainly the most interesting courthouse I’ve visited so far. It looks more like a big cottage or a small resort set in among the trees. It really blends in with the environment quite well; certainly the architects did a good job designing the building. On the other side of the parking lot is the tribal police and court building. I’m not sure what the relationship is between the county and tribal police and court systems.

The Gold Star memorial

The Highground

I visited The Highground Veterans Memorial Park just outside of Neillsville on Monday April 17, 2017. It’s a beautiful place with many monuments and memorials to those who have served our country in the armed forces.
