Green Lake County was created in 1858. The land which now makes up Green Lake county was part of the original Brown County, but in 1836 this became part of the original Marquette County. After the legislature created Green Lake County in 1858, the county seat was the city of Berlin. In 1862 the county seat was moved to Dartford, which eventually was renamed Green Lake.
The new county was named after Green Lake (sometimes called Big Green Lake) which is the deepest natural inland lake in Wisconsin. And of course the county seat is the City of Green Lake.
The Green Lake County courthouse is located at 571 County Road A in Green Lake. The old courthouse is located at 492 Hill Street in Green Lake. It was built in 1899 and was designed by architect William Waters. We visited Green Lake on Tuesday July 28, 2015 on our way back to Madison from Green Bay. It was a short visit because we were running a little behind schedule, but we stopped to see the new courthouse as well as the old courthouse in downtown Green Lake.
As far as I can remember, this was my first visit to Green Lake County; certainly I’ve never been to the City of Green Lake before. It seems like a pretty nice place; I’d like to visit again when there is more time to walk around and see something of the city and the lake.
